Winter in Kangaroo Valley means short days and cool nights, which is all the excuse you need to light the fire. The Secret Garden Cottage is an exclusive-use, three-bedroom cottage on five acres, two hours from Sydney or Canberra, with the village a 500-metre walk away. The minimum stay is two nights, so a weekend fits perfectly.
The main living room downstairs has a wood fire, and the firewood is supplied. Every bedroom has its own heater, so nobody draws the cold room. One recent guest put it well:

The master bathroom has a corner spa bath built for two and a separate shower. Linen and bath products are supplied, so all you need to pack is something warm to change into.
There are board games, books and a big DVD and Blu-ray collection, plus a second living room upstairs with the movie stash, so the house can spread out. The kitchen was rebuilt in 2021 and has a gas cooktop, oven, dishwasher and Nespresso. On a clear night, rug up at the fire pit on the lookout, or take a torch out at dusk to look for wombats.
