Hampden Bridge
Hampden Bridge is one of Australia’s most historic bridges, being over 110 years old and one of the last surviving wooden suspension bridges in the country. The bridge completed construction in 1898 and its architecture is reflective of a gothic revival that was being experienced in Australia at the time. The engineering behind the bridge is a real testament to the technology of the Victorian era. Constructed from locally quarried sandstone, the four turrets are reminisce of a castle’s portcullis and drawbridge.
Below the bridge is the Kangaroo River and a small beach where visitors can relax in the sun and take a dip in the cool waters, this is easily accessible from the village side of the bridge. Kayaks can also be hired on both sides of the bridge.
