Things to do in the Kangaroo Valley
Kangaroo Valley is Australia’s Most Beautiful Valley. It is a place of rolling green hills, lush rainforest and sparkling creeks and rivers, all surrounded by the striking escarpments which watch over this special place. The healing and invigorating powers of the Valley are generated by the morning mists, the clear air, and the abundance of water ways to enjoy.
The first time you wind down the hill through the rainforest into the Kangaroo Valley, you know you have found somewhere special. Emerging through the trees, you catch your first glimpse of the Valley below. Past the green pastures and the “World’s Best Pie Shop” and you are greeted by the historic Hampden Bridge, Australia’s last surviving wooden suspension bridge. Once you cross the bridge, you are welcomed into a town with no traffic lights, friendly locals and so many wonderful shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
- Wander into town for a delicious meal at one of the many cafes and restaurants – see our Places to Eat page for our favourite recommendations.
- Head to the Kangaroo Valley Friendly Inn for lunch in the famous beer garden. The kids will love the playground while you enjoy the delicious pub grub and a cool drink. Your dog can even come too and there is often live music on the weekends.
- Hire a canoe at Kangaroo Valley Adventures and paddle down the Kangaroo Valley River. Reward yourself with a lovely picnic by the River at the Bendeela Picnic Grounds (you will find a picnic basket and rug at the Cottage for your use). Go at dusk and you are guaranteed to meet a few of the local wombats.
- Walk, jog or cycle along the walkway that stretches from the Secret Garden Cottage to the other side of Hampden Bridge. Reward yourself with a delicious pie from “The World’s Best Pie Shop” at the end of the path. (About 3.5 kilometres away)
- Go for a bushwalk. There are 25 different walks in and around Kangaroo Valley, ranging from gentle sightseeing strolls around the village, through to difficult walks for experienced bush walkers. The National Parks and Wildlife publication “Walks Guide – Kangaroo Valley and Adjacent National Parks” describes all of these walks in detail and is available from many of the shops in Kangaroo Valley.
- Visit the Pioneer Museum Park to step back in time to see the Valley through the experiences of the original European settlers.
- Enjoy our local “beach” and swimming hole under the Hampden Valley Bridge. The water is clean and refreshing and your dog can come too. Access is on the Village side of the Bridge
- Explore the Valley on horse back at the Man From Kangaroo Valley Trail Rides.
- Have a refreshing swim in the Kangaroo Valley local pool. The 25 metre community pool is at the Valley show grounds, just a short 100 metre stroll up the road from The Secret Garden Cottage, next to the playing fields and children’s playground.
- Take a Flavours of the Valley Foodies tour and enjoy some of the amazing epicurean offerings that this region has to offer, including Yarrawa Estate’s award winning wines and the spectacular Kangaroo Valley olives.
- Why not do a cooking course with Flavours of the Valley while you are here?
- Meander through the Village, pick up some unique homewares, antiques or original wooden carved pieces – perhaps a hand carved wooden rocking horse for the kids?
- Enjoy a game of Golf at the par 71 championship 18 Hole Kangaroo Valley Golf Course.
- Hire some fishing equipment from Kangaroo Valley Safaris and try your luck in the River.
